BY MARY WILTONOkay listen. JUST because you enjoy vinyl doesn’t mean you’re a pretentious brat. Let’s be real though… you probably are. HOWEVER, there are legitimate reasons why everyone should learn about, listen to, and overall support this wonderful form of physical media. 1. It is a chance for us to put away all of our electronic devices and simply be present with the music without any distractions. Streaming from your phone means you’re still getting constant interfering notifications.
2. Vinyl cannot be pirated. 3. The album art is almost completely lost when music is digital. 4. No ads! 5. You are forced to listen from beginning to end and appreciate the ENTIRE album. Electronically, you are able to skip around and completely miss hidden treasures. 6. You can hand down your records to your children and then they can hand em down! They will be grateful! I love rummaging through my parents’ collection and seeing that tasteful palette of the 1970s. 7. It is an active experience. You have to flip through the records, take it out of the sleeve, and turn the record when its time. You aren’t just mindlessly tapping a screen. 8. It gives you a chance to support local stores/small businesses. 9. Shopping for vinyl is social and unique each time. It’s fun eavesdropping on conversations about music, you can meet new people with similar tastes, and can receive recommendations. 10. According to Matthew Hughes, writer of 4 Reasons Why Vinyl Is Better Than Digital, vinyl sounds way better than digital media. “Most of the music you listen to is stored and broadcasted in a format where details are lost and quality is reduced. This is because audio is compressed in order to make it small enough to shove on a phone, or to broadcast over airwaves. If you’re listening to Spotify, an MP3, or the radio, you’re still not getting the full picture of the track. Vinyl is what’s called a “loseless format.” Nothing has been lost when pressing a record. It sounds as good as the producer or band intended.” Now, if you feel the desire, go get a record player! Happy listening!

You brought up a lot of really good points! I am always skipping to my favorite parts of songs when I’m on my phone. And the artwork? Totally agree. Thanks for bringing attention to this all too often forgotten way of listening to music.

Everything you said is so true! I absolutely LOVE getting new records, especially used or older ones. The best part is discovering the beauty of songs that I’ve never listened to. 10/10 agree with what you said :)
